no1s1 in «Algorithmic Imaginary»

In 2023, no1s1 – a house that belongs to nobody – was part of the exhibition «Exploring the Decentralized Web – Art on the Blockchain» in the House of electronic Arts in Basel. The corresponding publication was published by Christoph Merian Verlag.

no1s1 (ongoing since 2021), a residential module autonomously controlled by a DAO and smart contracts, is the first example of a house that is self-managed, self-owned and open for communal use.

This project is a concept realized by Dezentrum in cooperation with the University of Zurich Blockchain Center, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Winterthur and the digitalization initiative of the Zurich universities DIZH.

About the exhibition «Exploring the Decentralized Web – Art on the Blockchain»

Blockchain technology is changing the internet and the way we live, communicate and act together online and offline. Advocates of this technology point to the development of Web3, a new internet, and conjure up the idea of a gigantic future metaverse and the implementation of increasingly decentralized organizations and structures. Is this pure crypto-anarchist wishful thinking or a prospect of a more democratic and fairer future for all?

The publication is dedicated to the work and ideas of artists and theorists who analyse, question and rethink blockchain technologies and related applications such as DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations), NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) and the metaverse.
